The Tamil Nadu government has, on Friday, announced that three important metro rail stations in Chennai will be renamed after former Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers.
In the statement issued by the government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami said that the Alandur metro station will be renamed as Arignar Anna Alandur Metro station as the station is situated near Chennai International Airport, which is called as Anna International terminal.
CMBT (Koyambedu) metro station will be renamed as Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J Jayalalithaa CMBT Metro station in the honor of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who opened the metro station and CMBT bus terminus, which is Asia's largest bus terminus.

Along with that, the Central Metro station will be renamed as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M G Ramachandran Central metro station since the Chennai Central Railway station has been named after him. Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami said that the government has decided to rename the metro stations based on the recommendations by a high-level committee.
The Chief Minister further stated that these three stations are important ones in the first phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project and the committee has recommended the government to rename these prominent stations after three former Chief Ministers.
