Chennai sees rainfall in January for the first time in 100 years: How the residents react?

On Tuesday, the residents of Chennai became lucky enough to embrace the rainfall in January for the first time in hundred years as they were surprised to witness rainfall within five days into the New Year. While various disturbances and disruptions would be companions for the Chennai residents during the typical rainfall, some of the residents had expressed surprise over the historical rainfall. 

According to reports, rainfall during January isn't something frequent for the residents of Chennai and the northern districts of Tamil Nadu. January 2021 has got added to the club of such rare rainfall after several parts of the state had recorded heavy rainfall on Tuesday and the northern districts will also receive rainfall on Wednesday. Popular Tamil Nadu Weatherman Pradeep John said that the rains were the heaviest witnessed for the month of January in the city in over 100 years - since 1915. 

Pradeep John highlighted that Chennai had received seven times the amount of rainfall in a window of 15 hours for the month of January, which normally receives 20mm of rainfall. The historical showers were embraced by the residents of Chennai with many taking to Twitter and expressed how they feel to meet the rainy clouds for the first time over a century. 

Actor turned politician Khushbhu took to Twitter and said, "It's pouring hard in Chennai. Very strange to have this kind of weather in Jan". Thousands of Tweeple had shared photos and videos of how they feel to witness the strange and surprising shower. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai Nungambakkam had received the highest rainfall in the city at 63 mm of rainfall for 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Tuesday and the area has received 67 mm rainfall between 8.30 am till 2.30 pm. 

As per the Regional Meteorological Department prediction, Chennai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu and nearby Puducherry will record heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. As the sequel of incessant rainfall in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government has on Tuesday opened the shutters of the Chembarambakkam reservoir after the lake had reached its storage level. 

As per the update from the Indian Meteorological Department, Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu will receive light to moderate rainfall in the next 24 hours -till Wednesday and these regions would experience cloudy weather. Several parts of the city including the downtown and outskirts had witnessed heavy rainfall and the rainfall had inundated important roads in the city. 

Several northern districts like Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvannamalai and nearby Puducherry had recorded rainfall and will likely receive rainfall on Wednesday. The IMD had predicted that heavy rains will be recorded over Nilgiris, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Villupuram districts on Wednesday - January 6.
