Chennai rolls out mega Covid-19 vaccination programme for the first time!

For the first time since the launch of the Covid-19 vaccination drive, Chennai has on Thursday rolled out a mega vaccination programme with the aim of pushing vaccination across the city as the numbers of daily vaccination have been depriving for the past few days. The drive has come when the city is poured with more relaxations and surfaced with the predictions of the third wave of the pandemic.

According to reports, the Greater Chennai Corporation has announced a mega vaccination drive on Thursday - August 26 with 400 camps across the city limits. The officials had said that the vast campaign for the vaccination has been organized as the city's vaccination numbers per day had dropped from 36,000 to around 30,000 over the last seven days.

Speaking to a news agency, an official of the civic body said that the city is organized with 40 to 45 camps every day and the corporation wants to increase the scale of vaccination by installing more camps within its limits. The Corporation has also planned to set up 200 permanent camps for Covid-19 vaccination and to encourage more people to visit the camps and get vaccinated.

The official further noted that the residents are travelling longer and wait in queues to receive the vaccine doses currently and these hassles would be reduced if more camps are installed across the city and through setting up permanent camps, people can easily receive the vaccine doses and it will also reduce the vaccine hesitancy and he added that the corporation also wants to ramp up the measures to expand the vaccination programmes in the future. 

According to Chennai Corporation, a total of 37,04,807 shots of vaccine have been administered in Chennai so far as of August 24th including 24,794 shots that were administered on August 24th. According to the Tamil Nadu health department, the state has reported 1,573 fresh Covid-19 cases, 1,797 discharges, and 27 deaths on Wednesday. Overall, Tamil Nadu had recorded 26,05,647 cases so far as of Wednesday of which 18,352 are active, 25,52,507 have been discharged, and 34,788 had succumbed to the viral infection.
