Veteran actor and Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson S.Ve.Shekhar has been brought under books after the Chennai police slapped an FIR against him for insulting the national flag and defaming the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
The Chennai Crime branch has filed an FIR on Thursday against the actor turned politician under the grounds of the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971. The complaint against the actor has been lodged on Tuesday for insulting the national flag and defaming the Chief Minister.
According to the reports, the case has been filed under section 2 of Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971, and this section warrants three years of imprisonment or a penalty or with both the sentences. The complaint has filed against the actor based on his remarks when he responded to the Chief Minister's statement condemning the incident of throwing a saffron shawl on the MGR statue in Puducherry.
In his video, S.Ve.Shekhar had reacted to the Chief Minister's remarks and said that the saffron color is in the national flag too and he went on to question whether the saffron color can be removed and have just white and green colors in the flag. He further said, "The Chief Minister has mentioned saffron as a disgrace, and is he going to hoist the disgraced national flag on August 15? He went on to ask whether they have come to the decision of accepting Christians and Muslims and ignoring Hindus through removing saffron from the national flag.
His comments had sparked controversies and the ADMK party had also voiced against the actor for reacting against the Chief Minister. Following the video, a complainant, C Rajarathinam from Nungambakkam said that Shekhar's video had hinted that the tricolor represents Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. By citing that the actor has defamed the Chief Minister, the complainant said that such comments lead to communal tensions ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
Following the complaint, the Chennai police commissioner has directed the Crime Branch to investigate the matter. The Crime Branch has on Thursday filed an FIR against the actor and the reports say that he would be summoned for investigation soon. The development has come when Tamil Nadu Minister Jayakumar said that the appropriate action will be taken against the actor and BJP spokesperson on defaming the national flag and the Chief Minister. The state minister further stated that the government will be fulfilling the actor's long-term desire for going to prison.
