The Chennai Police have on Sunday arrested a cop, attached to the city's law enforcement agency, under the grounds of killing a 67-year-man. A case has been booked against him under appropriate sections. 32-year-old Ranjith Kumar was a constable in the Alwarthirunagar police station and on Sunday, he ran over the elderly man while he was driving his friend's car.
The incident had happened in Virugambakkam, Chennai and the Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation wing has booked him for causing death due to negligence and rash driving. Ranjith Kumar has on Sunday borrowed his friend's Toyota Innova car and he was driving the vehicle while another friend, 27-year-old Manikandan, was also on board. When he was driving the car in Devi Karumariamman Koil street in Virugambakkam, he had lost control of the vehicle as he suffered control over the car in the narrow street.
According to reports, Ranjith Kumar had skewed the vehicle to avoid colliding on a few children who were standing outside the temple and due to sudden deviation, he had lost control and ended up running the car over 67-year-old Shankar, who was sitting outside his home, which is opposite to the temple. Shankar had sustained a severe head injury and died on the spot. After the incident, several residents had gathered in the spot and barricaded Ranjith Kumar from leaving the place.
Ranjith Kumar had reportedly said that he was a police officer and shouted at them. The residents had then doubted that he was in an inebriated state following which they had informed the local police station. A team of the Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation police had arrived at the spot and they had checked whether Ranjith Kumar was under the influence of alcohol. However, the result revealed that he was not drunk and the police officials had then arrested Ranjith Kumar for killing an elderly man.
The police had filed an FIR against him under the grounds of causing death due to negligence and rash driving. Ranjith Kumar was earlier attached to the crime wing at JJ Nagar Police Station and later he was transferred to the north zone joint commissioner - traffic department as a gunman. One of the residents had told the police that the deceased Shankar had exited the temple just five minutes before the incident.
