Chennai has hit a big shot against the Covid-19 pandemic with the highest single-day vaccination, thanks to the corporation for rolling out the mass vaccination drive, which has become a major leap towards defeating the pandemic. Chennai has given more weight to Tamil Nadu's vaccination campaign as the state has set a new record in vaccination on Thursday. The development has come amid predictions of the third wave of Covid-19, which, as per the latest report, is expected to attain its peak in October.
According to the data from the health department, 1.25 lakh people have received their Covid-19 vaccine shots on Thursday, which is three times high than the daily average of 30,000. The record was made possible by the mega vaccination drive conducted by the Greater Chennai Corporation on Thursday. The civic body has installed 400 vaccination centres within its limits and the vast campaign was organized as the city's vaccination numbers per day had dropped from 36,000 to around 30,000 over the last seven days.
An official said that the city is organized with 40 to 45 camps every day and the corporation wants to increase the scale of vaccination by installing more camps within its limits. The Corporation has also planned to set up 200 permanent camps for Covid-19 vaccination and to encourage more people to visit the camps and get vaccinated. The official further noted that the residents are travelling longer and wait in queues to receive the vaccine doses currently and these hassles would be reduced if more camps are installed across the city and through setting up permanent camps, people can easily receive the vaccine doses and it will also reduce the vaccine hesitancy and he added that the corporation also wants to ramp up the measures to expand the vaccination programmes in the future.
As the sequel of the mega vaccination drive, the city has seen 1,25,147 residents turning to the centres for receiving the vaccine doses and it has become the highest single-day vaccination of the city. The previous single-day highest vaccination was recorded on April 16 by inoculating 49,010 shots. Thursday's drive had focused on residents with comorbidities and those in the special category such as people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or pregnant and lactating women and disabled people.
The reports say that the corporation has administered a total of 37.16 lakh shots - 25.94 lakh first doses and 11.22 lakh second doses as of Wednesday. On Thursday, each of the 200 wards within the corporation limits had two vaccination centres and the city had targeted to cover 1 lakh people through the mega vaccination drive. However, the result was overwhelming as the city had exceeded the target by covering 1.25 lakh people in a single day.
As per the official data, the maximum number of jabs on Thursday were administered in the Tondiarpet zone (13,650), followed by Kodambakkam (12,010), Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (11,546), and Teynampet (10,974). The zones that recorded fewer vaccinations on Thursday include Perungudi (5,510), Shollinganallur (5,500), Tiruvottiyur (5,487), and Manali (3,350). The data had further shown that most vaccines were given by the Urban Community Health Centres. The health centres in Adyar, Vadapalani, Padi, Porur, RK Nagar, and Mirsahibpet, had recorded more than 7,000 vaccinations each on Thursday.
Celebrating the achievement, Chennai Corporation took to Twitter and thanked everyone involved for their support. The civic body wrote, "Dear Chennaiites We have achieved the maximum number of vaccinations targeted for today!". While Chennai has hit a big shot to defeat the pandemic, Tamil Nadu had also set a new record in vaccination on Thursday. The state had recorded its single-day highest vaccination by administering the vaccine doses to 5.72 lakh people on Thursday. By far, it has become a significant record in the country and the state has also reported another crucial record as Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian has said that Tamil Nadu is the only state in India that had administered vaccines to more pregnant women.
According to the Tamil Nadu health department, the state has reported 1,559 fresh Covid-19 cases, 1,816 discharges, and 26 deaths on Thursday. Overall, Tamil Nadu had recorded 26,07,206 cases so far as of Wednesday of which 18,069 are active, 25,54,323 have been discharged, and 34,814 had succumbed to the viral infection.
