In its response filed before the Madras High court with accord to the plea seeking to regularize the vendors on Marina beach on Monday, the Greater Chennai Corporation has cited that it will consent the license only for 900 vendors to install their stalls on the Marina beach and those vendors would be identified and provided with a uniform vending carts at the cost of Rs 27 crore.
By tabling the disclosure, the state additional advocate general Rajagopal said that apart from the identified vendors, no one would be allowed to put their stalls on the beach. He stated that in 2017, a total of 1,544 vendors were taken into account and nearly 1,486 vendors were issued with identity cards and in 2019, the totality of the shops stood at 1,962 in which 808 vendors had identity cards. With the view of enhancing the loop road behind the Lighthouse, Rajagopal cited that the city's corporation has been discussing with the authorities of the coastal regulatory zone for cementing the footpath close to the seaside.
He further asserted that the corporation has been negotiating with the fishermen community to reach out to the nearest market yard after the vendors have been limited on the beach. With the view of refraining the beach from the intrusion and to enhance the mechanisms of maintaining the beach, the Madras High court bench comprised of Justices Vineet Kothari and Suresh Kumar had directed the commissioners of Chennai city police and the corporation to install the parameters towards making Marina as a world-class beach in six months.
Advocate Rajagopal, after tabling the proposals of the government to issue smart and uniform carts to the vendors, claimed that the government has been initiating various mechanisms for upgrading the landscape of the beach and the shops have lined up to ensure that the beach and the sea have clear visibility from the roads and revealed that the corporation had dispatched about 175 sanitary workers on the shift basis to clean and to maintain the beach, its gallery, service road, footpaths, and restrooms.
After noting the response, the division bench had ordered the Greater Chennai Corporation to disclose the outline and the detailed plan to construct the mechanisms and the bench had adjourned the hearing on January 8, 2020.
