Central team to disclose Chennai's Corona situation to Delhi - What's in the report?

Nearly ten days after touring Chennai and taking stock of the Coronavirus situation in the city, the five-member expert committee would be disclosing its report on the findings to the Central government on Monday based on which the Center would release the fund to the state to combat the virus.

According to the reports, the five-member committee belongs to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and has been headed by the joint secretary of the Central agency. The committee arrived in Chennai on April 24 to inspect the state of the Coronavirus outbreak in the city and how the government is tackling the spread. The committee has directly visited various places in Chennai.

During their tenure, they have visited the places that have major footfalls including Amma Canteens, Koyambedu Market, Chennai port, and the slum areas of the city which are housing dense population of local people and migrant workers. With accord to the report from the Central team, the Central government would release the funds to the state government. According to the revenue department officials, besides inspecting the outbreak, the Central team had also audited how people are maintaining social distancing measures.

The committee has identified some of the people who weren't wearing masks following which they advised the local authorities towards ensuring that people are wearing masks and adhering to the guidelines and advisories. The committee rendered its satisfaction on providing food at the Amma Canteens and supplying essentials to the stranded migrant workers.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had earlier asked the Central government to release Rs 9,000 crore to the state to combat the Coronavirus pandemic. However, the Center reverted with allocating over Rs 500 crore and the Chief Minister took the prospects of the virtual meeting and in the last three episodes of virtual meeting with the Prime Minister, Palaniswami presses the Center to release the remaining fund.

The report from the Central team becomes crucial for the governments on balancing the health and financial crisis. Tamil Nadu has been reporting surging cases for the past few days and the graph of the affected cases has been rising sharply amid the lockdown and restrictions. The state has reported about 1000 cases in the last six days by marking successive highest single-day rises and of these cases, about 85% of cases were reported in Chennai.
