Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was caught in a strange trouble after erroneously reading out last year's budget in the state assembly on Friday - February 10. By the time he realized his mistake, the house witnessed an uproar as the BJP legislators used the prospect of attacking Gehlot, who later apologized for what has happened.
Ashok Gehlot is the Chief Minister of the Congress ruling Rajasthan and he is also holding the finance portfolio, due to which he was preparing to present the state's budget for upcoming year in the assembly. However, Gehlot had gone embarrassed when he was told that he was reading the last year's budget. According to reports, Gehlot didn't even realise that he was reading an old budget for the first eight to ten minutes.
The assembly's Chief Whip Mahesh Joshi interrupted Gehlot and informed him that he was reading out the last year's budget. Joshi alerted the Chief Minister when he was informed about the mistake by top finance officials who were seated in the house. The BJP took up the matter and slammed the Congress government and despite Speaker CP Joshi asking the legislators to maintain order in the house, the saffron party had uproared against the Chief Minister.
As the BJP MLAs continued their trend of uproar, Speaker CP Joshi adjourned the house for thirty minutes. However, the BJP legislators had staged a sit-in protest in the House. It has been reported that Rajasthan Chief Secretary was asked to bring the copy of the new budget. When the Chief Secretary and other top officials rushed to get the new copy, the BJP alleged that the budget has technically leaked.
BJP MLA Pratap Singh Singhvi alleged that the budget copy should be brought only by the Chief Minister and said that now the present budget got leaked as it had passed through many hands. When the assembly was reconvened after 30 minutes, Leader of Opposition Gulab Chand Kataria had raised questions how other members knew that the Chief Minister was not having the correct budget document.
Kataria further claimed that the budget has been leaked and urged the state government to go back to the Governor and seek a fresh date for presenting the budget. Responding to these allegations, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that there was no leak and an extra page from last year's budget, which was for reference, was among the fresh budget documents.
Before starting to present the new budget, Gehlot apologized for the mistake and said, "I feel sorry, what happened was by mistake." After presenting the budget, Gehlot took to Twitter and wrote, "BJP just wants to show it is against the development and progress of Rajasthan. There is only one obstacle in Bachat, Rahat, Badhat (saving, relief, and progress) - BJP." It is pertinent to note that this is the last budget of the present Gehlot government as Rajasthan would be hosting an assembly election this year.
