A case is filed against TN BJP Youth wing leader: How his tweet boomeranged with trouble?

Amid sparking controversy over his tweet alleging that the Hindu temples are being demolished in Tamil Nadu, the Chennai police have filed a case against Tamil Nadu BJP youth wing leader Vinoj P Selvam under various sections including the intention of causing a riot. The case was filed based on a complaint filed by a Chennai resident, on the grounds of spreading false information and promoting enmity.

According to reports, Vinoj's tweet on January 27 has alleged that Hinduism was being oppressed and that 130+ temples are demolished in 200+ days. His tweet had carried an illustrated cartoon of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin seeing a temple being demolished by a crane. The BJP youth wing leader has posted his propaganda in a bid to gain Hindu votes in the upcoming urban local body polls.

A part of his tweet read, "Support the BJP alliance for good governance and liberation in the local government." The text on the picture read "200+ days, 130+ temples- Still counting..." The tweet has been going viral among the Hindu outfits and sparked controversy as his tweet is been seen as BJP's campaign of religion and division in the state.

It must be noted that Vinoj Selvam had contested in the 2021 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu as a BJP's candidate in the Harbour constituency, Chennai. He had eventually lost the race to DMK MLA PK Sekar Babu, who is now serving as the Tamil Nadu Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. Hours after putting out the tweet, the BJP leader has got his tweet boomeranged into trouble.

Ilangovan, a resident of Kilpauk, Chennai, has moved a complaint to the Chennai police against Vinoj's tweet in which the complainant has said that Vinoj's tweet had attempted to spread false information, which disrupt public peace and creat enmity between different groups. Based on the complaint, the Chennai police had booked an FIR against Vinoj Selvam under sections 153 - wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot, 505 (1)(b) - public mischief, and 505(2) - creating or promoting enmity and hatred of the Indian Penal Code.
