Days after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has adopted a resolution in the state assembly to revoke the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in the state, Tamil Nadu opposition party has taken a similar stance and on Thursday, DMK president and Opposition leader M K Stalin, amidst the results of the local body polls, has moved a private resolution in Tamil Nadu state assembly with the view of adopting the resolution to annul the implementation of the controversial act.
It has been reported that his resolution would likely get tabled in the assembly when the house assembles on January 6th, 2019. On Thursday, Stalin's resolution was submitted at the assembly by the DMK MLAs including former Chennai Mayor and sitting MLA of Saidapet M Subramaniam. The resolution, that was addressed to the Speaker, mentioned that the amended Citizenship Act violates and discriminates against the Sri Lankan Tamils and Muslims and added that the act has levied division among the people and instigated the protests and the unrest across the nation.
The resolution has also quoted the Central government's upcoming agenda of implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR). On Tuesday, the state of Kerala, which is one of the strongest critics of the CAA and NRC, has adopted the resolution moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the legislative assembly and the resolution was adopted by assembling the members for the one-day special session and the resolution was unanimously supported by the ruling Communist and opposition Congress party members while BJP's single MLA in the house Rajagopal had voted against the bill. After passing the resolution, Kerala has become the first state to adopt such anti CAA resolution in India.
Following the anti-CAA resolution adopted by the Kerala legislative assembly, Tamil Nadu state opposition leader and DMK president M.K. Stalin has, urged the ruling ADMK state government to pass a similar resolution in the state's assembly to ensure that the controversial and biased CAA and NRC won't be implemented in the state and inline to that, nearly about 60 petitions have been tabled before the Supreme Court with the view of challenging the amended act and these petitions are likely to go for hearing on January 22nd, 2019.
However, on Wednesday, Union Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad said that the states are supposed to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act and urged the Opposition parties to get legal advice and cited that under Articles 245 and 256, the Parliament has the authority to pass the laws with the matter of naturalization and citizenship.
