A Chennai couple has strongly proven that the marriages are not only made in heavens but it also can be made on the heated grounds of agitation after they turned the protests as their venue for marriage. On Monday, amid the protests in Washermenpet, Chennai against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR), a Chennai couple Shahin Shah and Sumayya had turned the limelight on them after they got married in the middle of thousands of people.
The bride and groom have been taking part in the protests and they have decided to get married at the venue after being skeptical that whether their marriage would take place in the scheduled date as their family members have been engaging in the ongoing protests and their decision of getting married at the Chennai's Shaheen Bagh was backed and agreed by the family elders after which they were welcomed by the people on the protest ground. The reports say that their marriage was commended by an Imam, who introduced the couple at the venue and they bestowed with the blessings from the elders.
They married by holding the placard against the CAA, NRC, and NPR and the ceremony has briefly lasted and the couple was rained with the gifts. Shahin Shah had raised slogans against the act and he said that he would accept the bride but he will not accept CAA, NRC, and NPR and while Shah was seen raising slogans, Sumayya was carrying the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, which has become the fundamental mechanism for the agitations against the CAA across the country.
Washermenpet has been witnessing huge protests against the CAA and the police action against the protesters on last Friday and the protests have been ongoing in Chennai and other parts of the state and the agitation at the Washermenpet has been termed as Chennai's Shaheen Bagh as it has been similar to the kind of protests carried out in Shaheen Bagh, Delhi. Shaheen Bagh protest is an ongoing 24/7 sit-in peaceful protest, led by women, that began with the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in both houses of Parliament on 11 December 2019. As on Tuesday, the protests at the Washermenpet had hit the fifth straight day.
The reports have stated that Sumayya was among the protesters who faced the police action on Friday night that had turned the demonstrations into violence after the police personnel had unleashed the attack and lathi-charge against the protesters by accusing that they had thrown stones towards police and attacked the police vehicles.
