No violence, No riots, No misdemeanors, No clashes, No agitations, but yet the people of Tamil Nadu have sent a simple, peaceful and powerful message to the Center that they would no way accept the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) and this is how they have shown their protests - through drawing 'Kollam' in front of their houses.
These small and a piece of drawings were put in the streets of Besant Nagar, Chennai on Sunday and the simply styled protest had stormed across the state after the Chennai police had arrested the people who involved in drawing the Kolams or patterns in the form of rangolis with the anti CAA and NRC slogans. Soon after the police department has exploded the heat waves, the people across the state including some of the political leaders have decorated their homes with the Kolams to stand against the controversial bill and to extend the solidarity among each other.
Of those important leaders are DMK President M K Stalin and DMK MP Kanimozhi who drawn the anti CAA Kolams in their respective houses. Kanimozhi's home in CIT Colony, Chennai was seen with the Kolam that said 'Venndam CAA NRC' - We don't want CAA NRC and it was painted by citing that the limestone powder would disappear in the rainfall. In the next few hours, DMK President Stalin reiterated the same message from his house and so does the residence of Former DMK president and Chief Minister Karunanidhi in Gopalapuram.
Adding to the queue, most across the state have been sending a strong and powerful message to the Center through drawing such Kolams in front of their residences. It was indeed directed by the Chennai police department who, on Sunday, detained five residents of Besant Nagar who put Kolams with anti CAA NRC slogans and the actions of arresting the people who neither instigated nor spurred the agitations had sparkled the protests and condemnations from the people who accused the police department on detaining them for expressing their right to dissent the act, however, the assistant commissioner of police said that they had detained the residents to prevent the law and order issues.
Although they had been acquitted later, it failed to remedy the protests against the police as the people took social media where the hashtags like 'DMK Kolam protest' and 'Kolam against CAA' were on the list of the top trends in Twitter through which thousands of the users had posted the pictures of the Kolams they have drawn in their residences. By condemning the arrests, DMK leader Kanimozhi had tweeted that 'I have learned that drawing Kolam in front of the residence is anti-national and lauded Edappadi Palaniswami's government for protecting the independence, upholding the basic rights, and for obeying their masters'.
