Kerala has a different, yet a strong story to tell the rest of Indian states during the Republic day celebrations. While the rest of Indian states had hoisted the flag by singing the National Anthem, communist ruling Kerala had read out the preamble of the Constitution and formed a human chain procession- a massive human chain that covered nearly 620 kilometers across the state through which the state had demanded the Central government to revoke the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Kerala has been the strongest Indian state to pioneer the protests against the CAA and it was the first Indian state to adopt the anti-CAA resolution in its assembly and also the first state to move the Supreme court to challenge the constitutional validity of the act. The reports say that on the 71st Republic Day which was marked on January 26, 2020, Kerala hoisted the national flag and the churches and mosques in the state had read out the preamble of the constitution as part of sending the strongest voice to the Centre.
On Sunday, most of the mosques under the Kerala state Wakf board and churches that fall under the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council hoisted the national flag and read the preamble of the constitution and some of the churches read a circular and an oath was taken with the view of protecting the constitution. The ruling party had played an important role in hooking up the human chain as the party had organized the human chain from Kasaragod in North Kerala to Kaliyakkavilai in South Kerala. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI leader Kanam Rajendran had joined the protest in Trivandrum, the state's capital.
Senior communist party leader Ramachandran Pillai was the first link of the 600 kilometers Human chain at Kasaragod and M.A.Baby was the last one at Kaliyakkavilai and the human chain stretch had several notable personalities who joined hands to press their notions against the CAA. The reports have stated that the human chain was formed at 4 pm on Sunday and the ruling party had stated that the protest had seen the presence of about 60 to 70 lakh people and the human chain had taken oath unanimously to protect the constitution from the attempts of the Central government towards destroying it.
Similarly, the state of West Bengal had seen hundreds of people who took the streets against CAA. State's capital Kolkata had witnessed the human chain that stretched for about 11 kilometers and it has been reported that the human chain was formed with the motive of upholding unity and protect the constitution.
The people had gathered in fifteen major spots in the city such as Park circus, Nonapukur, Raja Bazar, Mullick Bazar, Rippon street, and Maniktala and the protestors were seen holding the banners and placards against the CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR). The human chain was organized by United Interfaith Foundation India. On Monday, Mamata Banerjee ruling West Bengal government had tabled the anti-CAA resolution in the state's assembly.
The resolution, that was moved by state parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee around 2 pm, urges the Central government to annul the CAA and to withdraw its plans of implementing NRC and NPR. By tabling the anti-CAA resolution, West Bengal had become the third Indian state to move such resolution followed by Kerala and Punjab.
