The state opposition party of Tamil Nadu DMK has, on Tuesday, fixed a target of acquiring more than one crore signatures from the people in the upcoming signature campaign that would be organized by DMK-led opposition parties in the state from February 2nd to 8th, 2020 with the motive of showcasing how the state and its people have been opposing the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), National Population Register (NPR).
DMK President Stalin has written to the senior party leaders and party cadres on Tuesday and directed the party cadres to go door to door and must meet every individual and acquire their signatures. The party has set the target nearly four days after convening the opposition party meeting to roll out the signature campaign in the state.
On Friday, the opposition parties of the state had unanimously decided to hold a signature campaign against these three implementations of what the parties had accused the BJP of allegedly upholding its Hindutva propaganda.
While addressing the reporters after concluding the meeting, Stalin said that the signatures received from the people during the campaign would be presented to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind as part of stressing the Central government to revoke the enacted amendment that was largely criticized as biased and against of the Indian constitution.
The reports stated that Stalin would be launching the signature campaign in his Kolathur constituency while Tamil Nadu Congress party chief K.S.Alagiri would flag it in Avadi and MDMK chief Vaiko will start the campaign in Madras Harbour whereas CPM state secretary Balakrishnan would be launching in Villupuram. It must be recalled that DMK, which has been one of the strongest critics against CAA, had held a massive procession against the CAA in Chennai on December 23rd, 2019 and this would mark as the second anti-CAA campaign organized by the party.
