The Tamil Nadu Opposition party DMK has, on Monday, boycotted the assembly session after the House Speaker has denied the request of the opposition to adopt the resolution against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.
The legislative assembly had resumed the budget session on Monday after the weekend amid the ongoing CAA protests in Chennai and across the state. It was earlier anticipated that the police action towards the protesters would largely erupt the ruckus in the assembly and reports say that the opposition party members had voiced against the ruling government today's session over the lathi charge and the police crackdown against the protesters in Washermenpet last Friday.
While addressing in the assembly, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has said that the violence at the Washermenpet had instigated by the anti-social elements and stated the protests were rolled out without prior permission from the government and the agitators had harmed the police personnel when they attempted to arrest them and the protesters had destroyed the police vehicles and hurt the police officials. The reports have stated that the opposition party members had refused to consider the explanation from the Chief Minister.
Opposition leader Stalin has demanded the assembly to pass and adopt the anti-CAA resolution. By highlighting his party's recent anti-CAA signature campaign, he appealed to the government to adopt the resolution at the current assembly session. He stated that Tamil Nadu has been protesting against CAA similar to Delhi and asked the government on who had prompted the police to carry out the lathi charge against the protesters in Washermenpet following which the peaceful demonstrations had turned into violence. However, the House Speaker had refused to accept the DMK's petition of tabling the anti-CAA resolution. By dismissing the DMK's notion, Speaker stated that it's less likely to adopt the anti-CAA resolution in the assembly.
Following the denial from the Speaker, the opposition party members including DMK and Congress had boycotted from the assembly. While addressing the reporters after staging a walkout, DMK President Stalin said that the Speaker had dismissed the anti-CAA petition without having a debate in the assembly. Congress leader Ramasamy had urged the Speaker to disclose the official statement of either accepting or dismissing the anti-CAA petition.
Earlier, the opposition party ruling states like Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, and Puducherry had unanimously adopted anti-CAA resolutions in its respective assemblies and DMK has been demanding the ruling ADMK government to adopt the resolution that would annul the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR).
