The sequel of the increase in the water flow due to heavy rainfall in Bihar has collapsed a portion of the bridge that was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on June 16, 2020.
According to the reports, the portion of the Sattarghat bridge on Gandak river has collapsed on Wednesday - July 15 following the increase in the water flow. The bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs 263.48 crore and the Chief Minister inaugurated the bridge through video conferencing on June 16, 2020.
The bridge is located at Sattarghat under the Kesaria block of East Champaran. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has laid the foundation stone for the construction of the bridge on April 5, 2012, after the demand kept by the local people. The bridge is 1.44 km long and it has reduced the distance between Gopalganj, Saran, and East Champaran districts by 45 kilometers.

The collapse of the 29-days-old bridge which was constructed for over eight years had drawn massive criticism from the opposition parties which fiercely question Nitish Kumar's government and the sudden collapse of the bridge that was built at a cost of Rs 263.47 crore. Bihar Congress Chief Madan Mohan Jha said that the inauguration of the bridge on June 16 and its destruction on July 15.
He further called the government not to accuse the poor rat for the collapse. However, the Bihar state government maintained that the bridge is safe. Bihar Road Minister Nand Kishore Yadav said there has been no damage to the main Sattarghat Bridge. The collapsed portion was away from the main bridge.
The government's additional chief secretary stated that the collapsed bridge is located inside the embankment area of Gandak. The main bridge is absolutely safe and the traffic will resort once the water pressure reduces. By citing that the collapse has caused due to the national disaster, the additional chief secretary said that there are no irregularities in the construction.
BJP party, which observes alliance with the ruling party, said that the bridge is completely safe. The BJP spokesperson stated that the opposition RJD party has been making false propaganda. By claiming that Nitish Kumar's government is working for corruption-free development, the BJP spokesperson urged the RJD party - led by Lalu Prasad Yadav, to issue its apology publicly for its false propaganda.
