Amid being surfaced with outrage over its flawed handling of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Central ruling BJP has been inviting resentments and stirring controversies over its campaign and advocacy for using cow dung and cow urine to beat the pandemic, as part of its Hindutva propaganda, despite the repeated warnings from the experts that they won't cure the pandemic. Now, a BJP ruling state has gone to the extent of slapping the National Security Act on a journalist and an activist for speaking against cow urine.
According to reports, the BJP ruling Manipur has on Monday booked journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem and activist Erendro Leichombam under the National Security Act over the posts they made after the death of the BJP state president. The two had said the Central ruling party should stop promoting cow urine as a cure for the COVID-19 viral infection. The Manipur police had slapped the National Security Act against the two and taken them into custody.
The police had arrested Wangkhem and Leichombam on May 13 for a Facebook post on a complaint alleging that two had insulted the Manipur BJP Chief Tikendra Singh, who had succumbed to the viral infection on the same day. The reports say that the complaint was filed by state BJP Vice President Usham Deban Singh and General Secretary P Premananda Meetei.
On Monday, the two were produced before the Imphal court which later had awarded them bail, but before the release, the BJP ruling state government has invoked the National Security Act. In its bail order, the court has slammed the police and said that the law enforcement agency should not arrest someone before the police can satisfy themselves on the reasons behind the arrest.
In his Facebook post, Wangkhem wrote in the local language that Cow dung and cow urine didn't work. On the other hand, activist Leichombam had said in his post that cow dung and urine were not a cure for the Coronavirus and expressed condolences at the death of the BJP state president. He further wrote, "The cure is a science and common sense."
On Monday, despite the warning from the experts, BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh Sadhvi Pragya Thakur had claimed that cow urine will protect from COVID-19. She further said that she consumes urine every day, which is the reason why she hasn't contracted the viral infection. Earlier, BJP MLA in Uttar Pradesh had released a clip drinking cow urine to beat COVID-19 and the BJP leaders' campaign for cow urine in a way affects the Center's vaccination campaign.
