In a shocking development, BJP Youth-wing leader in West Bengal Pamela Goswami has on Friday got arrested with cocaine. The development, which has come ahead of the state assembly polls, had stunned the Central ruling party amid its extensive campaign drive in the eastern state with the determination of ousting Mamata Banerjee's regime from the state.
According to reports, Pamela Goswami is the state secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in West Bengal and she got arrested by the police in the New Alipore area in south Kolkata. She was arrested along with his friend Prabir Kumar Dey for carrying cocaine in her car. The police said that around 100 gm of cocaine, worth a few lakh of rupees, was found in her handbag and other parts of the car.
The law enforcement agency had swung into action based on the tip-off that Pamela has been possessing the drug. Based on the tip-off, the police officials of the New Alipore station had arrested Pamela and her friend when she was parking the vehicle. A team of policemen in eight vehicles had surrounded Goswami's car and arrested her.
A police officer said, "She (Pamela) was involved in drug trafficking for quite some time. Today, we got information that she was reaching the spot to hand over the drugs to the purchasers, along with her supplier Prabir". Along with Pamela and Prabir, her security guard, who was inside the car, was also arrested in connection to the supply of cocaine.
The police said that the probe into the matter is underway and the officials had launched an investigation to find out whether she is involved in any drug racket. According to a news agency, Pamela Goswami and Prabir came under the scanner after they were spotted repeatedly visiting a particular cafe, sitting in the parked car, and transacting with young people who drove up to the car on motorcycles. The police also had got a tip-off over the circulation of cocaine.
After they suspected a drug deal and received the tip-off, the police waited for Pamela to arrive at her usual spot and after she came, the officials had surrounded her and apprehended her for further investigations. Her arrest had stirred a fresh political fight between the state ruling Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and Central ruling BJP and both the rivals had exchanged a heated war of words over Pamela's arrest for possessing cocaine.
The ruling Trinamool Congress had flayed the saffron party and said it was a shame that even women from its fold were found involved in such illegal acts. West Bengal Minister and Senior TMC leader Chandrima Bhattacharya said, "Earlier, we saw the involvement of several BJP leaders in child trafficking and now drug trafficking. They cannot cry conspiracy every time". However, on the other hand, the BJP said it has suspected that Goswami was being framed and claimed that the law should take its course if Pamela is found guilty of possessing cocaine.
BJP MP Locket Chatterjee said, "We had earlier seen that the state police had named several BJP activists in arms cases. Pamela is a young girl and if she has done anything wrong, the law will take its course". West Bengal BJP Spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya maintained, "The model code of conduct is yet to come into effect and the police are still under the state government. So, anything can be possible".
The reports say that Pamela Goswami had worked as an air hostess, a model, and a TV serial actor before joining the BJP. She joined a Central ruling party in 2019 and she was later appointed as the secretary of West Bengal's Yuva Morcha.
