The Delhi BJP unit has on Sunday expelled three municipal councillors from the party for six years after they were surfaced with complaints of corruption. The state unit has said that the drive of expulsion will continue if such charges are levied on the other councillors. The move has come ahead of the upcoming civic polls and the BJP has been preparing to strengthen its bid that it won't spare any cases of corruption and irregularities.
After expelling three councillors, Delhi BJP President Adesh Gupta on Sunday has said that more heads will roll if they are found to have been involved in irregularities. He said that such action of expulsion was based on BJP's zero-tolerance policy. Speaking to PTI, Gupta said, "Not just councillors but officers of the municipal corporations will also not be spared if they are found involved in corruption."
He further appealed to the people to make videos if anyone asks money from them in the name of municipal corporations and send such videos to the Delhi BJP and an FIR will be booked against such extorters. Delhi will be going to civic polls early next year and BJP hopes to go clean without any corruption charges. The three expelled councillors were Sanjay Thakur - councillor of Sadulajab, Rajni Babloo Pandey - councillor of New Ashok Nagar, and Pooja Madan - councillor of Mukherjee Nagar.
Currently, the BJP rules the three civic bodies - North Delhi, East Delhi, and South Delhi while the city government is led by the Aam Aadmi Party. In the expulsion order, Gupta has said that all the three councillors were removed from the primary membership of the party for six years. Gupta noted that all three of them were issued with warnings several times and that they have been indulging in corruption and financial irregularities.
The reports say that the BJP had decided to expel them to give no room for the opposition to slam the party for corruption in the civic bodies. In the last one year, many leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had raised the issues of corruption and mismanagement in civic bodies. The Aam Aadmi leaders had held BJP councillors responsible for corruption and for the poor financial situation of the three municipalities.
According to reports, the leaders of Delhi's ruling party had alleged that several BJP councillors were involved in extortion and other corrupt exercises. Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj had in April this year accused the expelled BJP councillor Sanjay Thakur of being involved in corrupt practices. Bharadwaj has said that Thakur had been extorting money from common people and similar allegations were placed against the other two expelled councillors Rajni Babloo Pandey and Pooja Madan.
