Big surprise from PM Modi...TN BJP President L Murugan to become Union Minister!

Finally, after hectic meetings and anticipations, the names of the leaders who are going to be sworn in as the Union Ministers have been revealed. These leaders will be taking oath as the ministers, in Prime Minister Modi's cabinet expansion drive, at around 6 pm today in Delhi. As informed earlier, 43 leaders will be taking oath as the Union ministers. It will be the first cabinet expansion since Modi formed his second consecutive government in 2019.

In a significant induction, Tamil Nadu BJP President L Murugan will be becoming the Union Minister. He has been serving as the state president for over a year and now he has got a ticket to exercise national politics. Murugan has become Modi's surprise pick as he was not on the cards of the possible names. It is yet to be known about Murugan's portfolio.

According to reports, Murugan will soon be elected as a Rajya Sabha MP from any of the BJP ruling states as the constitution mandates that the Central ministers must have been elected to any of the two chambers of the Parliament. The reports close to the developments say that Murugan won't be getting a berth in the cabinet and he will be serving as the Minister of State under a cabinet minister or with an independent charge.

The Tamil Nadu BJP cadres had welcomed Murugan's political elevation and celebrated the news by bursting the crackers before the BJP's headquarters in Kamalalayam in Chennai. 44-year-old Murugan will be the second BJP president to become Union Minister after Pon Radhakrishnan. Murugan's immediate predecessor Tamilisai Soundararajan was made the Governor of Telangana.

With Murugan's political elevation, he will likely be resigning from the post of Tamil Nadu BJP President and his resignation would prompt a significant race in Tamil Nadu between the second-line party leaders to succeed Murugan as the BJP President. The political observers say that Murugan's appointment as the Union Minister will pour an ample boost to the Tamil Nadu BJP as Tamil Nadu has got its representation in the Union cabinet.

Murugan had served as Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes before becoming the BJP state president in Tamil Nadu. He has over 15 years of experience as an advocate and has been the standing counsel to the Indian government at Madras High Court since BJP had come to power. Murugan was the second leader from the Dalit community to become the state president.

He had worked for the ABVP in his college days. Murugan had completed his undergraduate degree in law and earned a Master in International Law and International Organizations from Madras University. Murugan had also contested in the 2021 state assembly polls in BJP's ticket from the Dharapuram constituency and he eventually had lost the election by a margin of 812 votes against DMK's N Kayalvizhi.

Two months after losing the elections, Murugan has now won a place in Modi's cabinet. He was among the 43 leaders who will take oath as the Union Ministers on Wednesday. Of these 43 leaders, 14 are under the age of 50. Some of the notable leaders who will become the Union Ministers include Jyotiraditya Scindia, former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane, Kiren Rijiju, Hardeep Singh Puri, Mansukh Mandaviya, Bhupender Yadav, Kishan Reddy, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Meenakshi Lekhi, Ajay Bhatt, and Rajkumar Ranjan Singh.
