In a big political twist, Ku Ka Selvam, a familiar face in Tamil Nadu, has joined back the DMK years after quitting the party. Selvam had served as the DMK MLA from the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai in the previous assembly and in the midst of his legislative tenure, he had parted ways from the DMK and joined the BJP over a dispute within the Dravidian camp.
Ku Ka Selvam was one of the prominent leaders in the DMK and was known to be one among the few leaders close to MK Stalin. Selvam was representing downtown Chennai in the assembly where he had a stronghold. In August 2020, Selvam had sent shockwaves to the DMK party's leadership over his decision of joining the BJP. The talk of his efforts to join BJP had come a month after the then senior DMK leader VP Duraisamy had joined the BJP.
Selvam had joined the DMK in 1997 after exiting the ADMK party. One of the top leaders in Chennai, he had represented the Thousands Lights constituency that was earlier represented by MK Stalin. During that time, it was said that Selvam was in dissent against the party leadership for not awarding him the post of secretary of Chennai's West party district, which was earlier held by J Anbalagan, who had died of Covid-19. The party has awarded the post to Chitrarasu, who is a member of the DMK Youth Wing and close to Stalin's son Udayanidhi Stalin.
Following that, Ku Ka Selvam had dissented over the appointment of Chitrarasu to the post and was sketching his plans to join the BJP. Days later, Selvam had officially joined the BJP by meeting the party's national president JP Nadda, which has shocked the DMK. As he had joined the BJP, the DMK leadership had dismissed Selvam from the party for indulging in anti-party activities.
After joining the BJP in August 2020, 63-year-old Selvam had claimed that several DMK leaders will leave the party soon. He had blamed Udhayanidhi Stalin for his decision of exiting the party and he went on to say that the DMK party has gone into the control of Stalin's son Udayanidhi and he further shocked the leadership that several senior DMK leaders are in touch with him and they will exit the party one after another.
He also had alleged that the DMK functionaries of more than 55 years of age don't have a future in the party. After supporting the BJP, Selvam expected that the Central ruling party would provide a ticket to him to contest from the Thousand Lights constituency in the 2021 assembly polls. However, the seat was awarded to Kushbhu Sundar and Selvam had campaigned for her. During the campaign, the BJP had attacked the DMK for not doing any welfare works in the constituency despite knowing that Selvam, who represented the constituency in the DMK, has joined their party.
After BJP's debacle, Selvam wasn't active in politics and he wasn't awarded any top role in the party. As the anti-BJP wave grows stronger in Tamil Nadu, it had troubled Selvam and after realizing that his politics is coming to an end with the BJP, he has made up his mind to join the DMK back. He had been taking efforts to contact the Chief Minister and join the party back and now, he has officially rejoined the DMK.
His political calculation has given a big shock to BJP and surprise to DMK as little did the cadres know that Selvam is coming back to the party. On Saturday, Selvam had met Chief Minister MK Stalin and officially joined back the DMK, the party in which he alleged that there is no future for the functionaries above 55 years.
