Former Indian Finance minister P Chidambaram's bail petition was today rejected by the Delhi High court in what it appears that the hands of the investigative agencies have been getting tightened against his involvement in INX Media case.
Its been over a month since Chidambaram has been awarded with solitary confinement at Tihar jail, Asia's largest detention facility under the allegations of INX Media case and after hearing his bail plea, the Delhi High court had dismissed his petition with accordance to the arguments placed by the counsel representing the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The high court bench headed by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait had pronounced with scrapping the bail plea of former Union minister under the grounds that the suspect, P Chidambaram had been a member of bar council and of the Rajya Sabha through which he might possibly influence the direct witnesses in this case and on the other hand, the high court had observed that Chidambaram doesn't possess with flight risk towards fleeing the country, if granted with bail.
While exchanging the arguments, the Solicitor General who represented CBI, Tushar Mehta had said that the investigative agency had exposed the evidence to him and had confronted the accused and cited that the risk of influencing the witnesses is much higher and added that the people with powerful position will merely end up influencing the witnesses.
Placing the rebuttals and counter to the arguments of the prosecution, Senior Congress leader and Chidambaram's counsel Kabil Sibal had denied the claims of the prosecution and assured that Chidambaram is not at a flight risk and questioned the agency to table the evidence that he will influence and tamper the witnesses.
After hearing the arguments, the Justice had abide by the statements of the Solicitor General after which the court had dismissed the bail plea of Chidambaram under the case booked against him by the CBI in 2017.
P Chidambaram has been accused for consenting his clearance for Mumbai based INX Media for acquiring exorbitant overseas funds from Mauritius than the company was certified by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), through the mediation by Karti Chidambaram, when Chidambaram was Union Finance minister in 2007 and adding to the case filed by the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate had also filed the case against him in 2018 under the grounds of money laundering relating to INX Media case, which at any time may probe Chidambaram for investigations.
After having odd responses from the Judiciary last month, the CBI had detained him on August 21st 2019 and lodged him in 7th block of Tihar jail, which exclusively houses the inmates of economical crimes. By condemning the arrest, the Congress party had termed the charges levied against Chidambaram as a political vendetta.
Senior Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel had visited Chidambaram in Tihar Jail.
