"Our democracy—pushed, tested, and threatened—proved to be resilient, true, and strong", this was one of the first messages from US President-elect Joe Biden to the nation after what has become a significant road ahead for the former Vice President to the White House in ousting Trump and ending his rhetoric and fictitious claims upheld by the incumbent to overturn the election results by alleging voter fraud in his bid to hold the office for four more years.
It's official that Joe Biden has won the state-by-state Electoral College vote that officially determines the US Presidency. Though the balloting of electoral college vote is just a formality in the United States as it happens after apparently electing the new president and it won't overturn the elections, it has become crucial this time with widespread scrutiny from across the country as it was pushed to reaffirm the winner of the 2020 Presidential elections to reassure its legitimacy as the incumbent has been taking efforts overwhelmingly to overturn the results, with being mentally unprepared to leave the office.
Ever since the results broke out which went in favor of Biden, tumultuous Trump has been rolling out his unproven allegations of voter fraud and he claimed that the election was stolen away from him. The 45th President, who nears to vacate the office with leaving the controversial presidency to the country, has gone to assault the democratic process and supporting and inciting his supporters to stage protests against his defeat. However, all his efforts of subverting the democratic process have gone in vain as both the electoral college and popular vote had reaffirmed Biden as the winner.
As Joe Biden has won the state-by-state Electoral College, he is now a month away from taking oath as the 46th President of the United States. Following the victory from the Electoral College, Joe Biden addressed the nation from his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware on Monday during which he had flayed Donald Trump for attacking the legitimacy of his victory. During his address, Joe Biden said, "In his battle for the soul of America, democracy prevailed. Now it's time to turn the page as we have done throughout our history - to unite, to heal".
In his speech that lasted for 13 minutes, Biden said, "The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. We now know that not even a pandemic or an abuse of power can extinguish that flame". The President-elect has called for unity while voicing confidence that the country's democratic institutions had held in the face of Trump's attempts to reverse the election outcome. The electoral college declared Biden as the winner with 306 votes against 232 votes for Trump, with 270 as the majority mark in the 538 electoral votes.
According to Reuters, Joe Biden had emphasized that Trump and his allies had filed dozens of legal challenges against the vote countings, including a Texas lawsuit that asked the US Supreme Court to invalidate four states' results. The court, including three Trump appointees, rejected the bid with no dissents last week. He also noted that his 306-232 margin in the Electoral College was the same as Trump's 2016 victory, which the Republican described as a 'landslide'.
When the ballotings of electoral college votes were scheduled to take place on Monday at state capitols of the respective states, some of the Trump supporters had called for protests on social media and the election officials had raised their concerns that the possibility of violence during the balloting amid Trump rhetoric. However, Monday's vote didn't witness any disruptions and it had held smoothly.
Through the electoral college votes, Biden has flipped some of the Republican stronghold states like Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Nevada into blue so in some of the key battleground states including Michigan and Pennsylvania. California, the most populous US state has given Biden a major advancement for the majority mark after its 55 electoral voters had unanimously cast ballots for him and his running mate, former California Attorney General, Kamala Harris.
With some of the electors of the Democratic party across the country had claimed that they were being threatened and intimidated, all the electors had received a police escort to and from the building. Amid unprecedented disturbances, Joe Biden has won the presidency with a majority of electoral college votes and he has got over 81.3 million votes or 51.3% of all votes cast through which the former Vice President had created history by securing more number of popular votes than any other president ever in the US history. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be taking the oath of the nation's first and second highest offices respectively on January 20, 2021.
However, on the other hand, Trump, who said last month that he would leave the White House if the Electoral College voted for Biden, is yet to concede the defeat and to show signs that he is ready to leave the office, rather, he kept himself busy in spreading his unsupported claims. As Biden nears to end Trump's rhetoric, the President-elect took to Twitter and said, "Today, the members of the Electoral College cast their votes for president and vice president. And once again, the rule of law, our Constitution, and the will of the people have prevailed. Our democracy—pushed, tested, and threatened—proved to be resilient, true, and strong".
