The DMK led opposition parties in Tamil Nadu had, on Sunday, dispatched about two crore signatures that were brought against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR), to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind with the view of demanding the Center to revoke the CAA and to pull back from its stand of implementing the NRC and NPR.
The DMK party has been voicing against the CAA since its implementation and earlier this month, the party had rolled out the signature campaign across the state against the CAA, NRC, and NPR between February 2nd and 8th and the party's cadres were directed to carry out door to door campaign towards acquiring the signature against the CAA from Tamil Nadu people and the party's leadership had already stated that these signatures would be sent to the President to press the Center to annul the act and the implementation of NRC and NPR.
On Sunday, the DMK and allied parties, in the statement, said that the signature campaign had acquired the signatures of 2.05 crore people from the state and the DMK had packed dozens of cartons containing the signatures following which the boxes have taken to Chennai airport from where the cartons were airlifted to Delhi.
In the statement, the parties had said that the Center must respect the view of Tamil Nadu people on the CAA, NRC, and NPR and demanded the Modi government to withdraw the CAA and to de-escalate the process of implementing the NRC and NPR. The parties stated they hope that the President would issue orders and advises the Central government towards these implementations.
Before dispatching the cartons, the DMK party hosted a small event at the party's headquarters in Chennai during which the cartons were placed before the statues of former DMK leaders Annadurai and Karunanidhi. The reports say that DMK President M.K.Stalin, party treasurer Durai Murugan, MDMK Chief Vaiko, VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalavan, former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Thangabalu, and CPM Rajya Sabha MP Rangarajan were present at the event.
