For the Oscar-winning music composer Isai Puyal AR Rahman, his upcoming venture would be another feather in his cap as he is all set to collaborate with Nayla Al Khaja, who is the first woman filmmaker in the United Arab Emirates.
Helming the movie 'Baab', Khaja is also writing it along with Masoud Amralla Al Ali. Rahman's work will bestow a remarkable feat on him from across and beyond the Arab world. According to reports, the team will commence the shooting in March 2023 in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven emirates of the Arab country as the team has planned to have a backdrop of the iconic Jais mountains. The cast will also include the indigenous people in the region to pour more authenticity into the movie.
Rahman's yet another collaboration in the beyond-Indian project has relished his fans even as he is setting up a strong musical base in Dubai through his Firdaus Studio. Speaking to Variety about the collaboration and the movie, AR Rahman said, "I am delighted to be working with Nayla on her feature film Baab, she is a passionate and promising filmmaker and an important creative voice within the Gulf region."
"The script is enigmatic, thought-provoking and promises to be both visually and emotionally engaging for universal audiences. I am looking forward to the journey", he added. Filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja said, "My grandmother came from the mountains, they have never been captured in a feature before, the sheer access to the indigenous people of Ras Al Khaimah and the soulful script is an untold story that I am eager to tell. With AR Rahman on board, we will live a very immersive journey that is authentic, haunting and real."
Variety that the movie follows Wahida, who is unable to make sense of her twin sister's mysterious death and is plagued by a haunting rhythm in her ears. She then discovers hidden cassette tapes and her relentless pursuit of the truth begins to untangle unresolved grief taking her deep into the mountains to delve into the complexities of the human soul.
As the first woman filmmaker in the UAE, Al Khaja is known for her shorts such as 'Malal' and 'The Road to Fulfilment'. She is making her feature debut with 'Three', which is all set to go into production later this year. She is also attached to executive produce and potentially direct episodes of 'The Alexandria Killings'.
