After adopting a resolution to repeal NEET from Tamil Nadu, the MK Stalin government has on Monday passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly against the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). The resolution was passed in the assembly with the support of the DMK alliance while the BJP had staged a walkout from the house to oppose the resolution.
Through passing the resolution, the MK Stalin administration has demanded the Union government withdraw the proposal of conducting CUET and termed the exam as regressive and undesirable. According to reports, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had announced that from the academic year 2022-23, admissions to various courses in all central universities funded by it would be done through CUET.
The common test would be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The commission has also said that the marks secured by students in CUET may also be considered by the state, private, and deemed universities for their admission process if such institutions are willing to consider. The announcement of CUET, which aligns with the NEET medical exam, has received huge flak from the opposition parties and the leaders are slamming the Centre for usurping the state's autonomy in education.
Tamil Nadu has become one of the early states to pass a resolution against CUET and after tabling the resolution, Chief Minister MK Stalin has said that the assembly feels that any entrance test that is based on the National Council of Educational Research and Training syllabus will not provide an equal opportunity to the students who are studying under varying syllabi in their respective states.
MK Stalin further said that the CUET would push a majority of students, who are deserved to pursue their higher studies in top varsities, to a precarious and disadvantageous position in securing admission to central universities. He stated that this common test would also reduce the number of students from the state studying in various central universities and affiliated colleges.
He had highlighted that the CUET will weaken the diversified school education system across the country and it will further make the students depend on the coaching centres to clear the exam, which will increase their mental stress. The resolution said that with the view of exercising the rights of state governments, this assembly urges the Union government to withdraw the proposal of conducting the CUET. While the ADMK had supported the resolution, the BJP had walked out of the assembly.
