In his final speech as US President, Donald Trump has preached unity- which perhaps the first time that he has used such a term in his four years of presidency, that directed the greatest political divide and destroyed democratic values and principles. Trump's advocacy for unity has come when he has become a symbol of insurrection, autocracy, and authoritarianism that has set the worst precedent in US history.
In his farewell video that was released by the White House, the outgoing president said that now more than ever, Americans must unify around their shared values and rise above partisan rancor to forge their common destiny. He said that he prayed for the success of Joe Biden in keeping America safe and prosperous and he extended his best wishes to the incoming administration.
Trump said, to serve as the President has been an honor beyond description and he thanked the American people for this extraordinary privilege. As Trump has said that he won't be attending the inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden, which makes him the first US President in 150 years to skip the swearing-in ceremony of his successor, he left the White House on Tuesday for his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Before his departure, he made his farewell address and said, "This week, we inaugurate a new administration and pray for its success in keeping America safe and prosperous. We extend our best wishes, and we also want them to have luck- a very important word". His farewell address, which lasted for 20 minutes, was filled with the phrases of self-appreciation and to support his claim that he really had made America great again.
Trump said, "America has given me so much and I wanted to give something back. Together with millions of hardworking patriots across this land, we built the greatest political movement in the history of our country and we also built the greatest economy in the history of the world. It was about America first because we all wanted to make America great again. We restored the principles that the nation exists to serve its citizens".
In irony to how he executed his duties during his presidential term, Trump claimed "Our agenda is not about right or left. It wasn't about Republican or Democrat, but about the good of a nation and that means the whole nation". Displaying that he is still in a war against China, Trump called the coronavirus and 'China virus'. He said, "Billions and billions of dollars were pouring into the US, but the virus forced us to go in a different direction". Despite being the worst-hit country by COVID-19, Trump claimed that the US has outnumbered other countries economically because of the economy that the US has built.
Vowing that his administration had addressed the pandemic effectively, Trump said, "Another administration would have taken three, four, five maybe even up to ten years to develop a vaccine. We did it in nine months". Trump's confined farewell address was all of the praises of his administration despite knowing the fact that his presidency was full of flaws and fictions. His call for unity was something that his White House didn't have business with for the last four years as he had spent his office with the full scale of rhetoric and authoritarianism.
Though he is well aware that the nation knows that he had incited the mob that sieged the US Capitol Hill in his bid to stop the chambers from certifying Joe Biden as the next president, Trump carefully stood away from claiming the responsibility for the insurrection, that destroyed the principles and iconic monument of democracy, and in his farewell address, he spoke about the siege and sought unity from his fellow Americans.
He said, "All Americans were horrified by the assault on our Capitol. Political violence is an attack on everything we cherish as Americans. It can never be tolerated. Now, more than ever, we must unify around our shared values and rise about the partisan rancor, and forge our common destiny". By citing that as the world's most powerful nation, Trump stated, "America faces constant threats and challenges from abroad. But the greatest danger we face is a loss of confidence in ourselves, a loss of confidence in our national greatness. A nation is only as strong as its spirit. We are only as dynamic as our pride. We are only as vibrant as the faith that beats n the hearts of our people".
He added, "Now, as I prepare to hand power over to a new administration at noon on Wednesday, I want you to know that the movement we started is only just beginning. There's never been anything like it. The belief that a nation must serve its citizens will not dwindle but instead only grow stronger by the day". "I go from this majestic place with a loyal and joyful heart, an optimistic spirit, and a supreme confidence that for our country and for our children, the best is yet to come", Trump said as he has ended his presidency of worst precedents.
He also asserted that he was especially proud to be the first President in decades who has started no new wars. The 74-year-old outgoing president had indicated in his farewell speech that he might be out of the White House, but he will continue to have an active public life. Joe Biden will be swearing-in as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday afternoon, at around 10 pm Indian time on Wednesday. Indian-origin Kamala Harris will be swearing-in as the first woman Vice President of the United States. They will be swearing-in at US Capitol Hill and while Trump said he won't attend the inauguration ceremony, Vice-President Mike Pence would be present during the ceremony as the United States prepares to turn the pages and welcome Biden to take the baton of reign.
