The Bar council and the advocates union of the state of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry union territory had unanimously decided to boycott the court hearings today to stand with and to show solidarity to the Chief Justice of Madras High court Tahilramani in the wake of her transfer from the Madras High court to the relatively smaller high court of Meghalaya.
Chief Justice Tahilramani had assumed her office in Madras High court in August 2018 and the Supreme court collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India had last week recommended the transfer of Justice Tahilramani to Meghalaya High court and the current Chief Justice of Meghalaya as her replacement in Madras High court, one of the oldest and prestigious judicial institutions in our country.
After being notified to discharge her duties from Madras High court, Justice Tahilramani had tabled her reconsideration request to the collegium to retain her office in Madras but her request was eventually rejected by the collegium which had pictured that she will be transferred to the Meghalaya High court at any moment.
With having an odd response from the collegium on her request of reconsideration, the reports say with conformity that Justice Tahilramani had on Saturday sent her resignation letter to the President of India and had copied to the Chief Justice of India, who heads the five members collegium in what it can be learnt that she had decided to step down from one of the highest judicial posts that will add the eligibility of becoming Supreme court justice.
In the view of opposing her transfer, the bar council and advocates union in the state of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry union territory had collectively issued directives to the advocates across all levels of courts to boycott their proceedings and to stage demonstrations to voice against the collegium to call off its recommendation to transfer Justice Tahilramani from Madras High court and had asked Justice Tahilramani to withdraw her resignation.
However, in the middle of mounting pressure that had surrounded Madras High court along with thousands of cases, it has been reported that Justice Tahilramani will chair the High court bench to carry on her daily hearings and it has been known after the registry of Madras High court had issued the list of cases that will be taken into hearing along with the names of justices, which had shown the bench headed by Justice Tahilramani.
