Former ADMK Minister KP Anbalagan has become the latest target of Tamil Nadu's Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) as the sleuths of the anti-corruption agency have stormed into the properties that are linked to the former minister in connection to the case against him that was filed under the grounds of amassing disproportionate assets. The raids have come after the corruption watchdog has filed an FIR against the former minister.
KP Anbalagan had served as the Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education in the previous ADMK regime led by Edappadi Palaniswami. He has now become sixth-former ADMK Minister to face raids from the DVAC under the eight-month-old DMK government led by MK Stalin. Over 200 DVAC officials have been conducting raids at around 57 locations linked to Anbalagan in several districts across Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Salem, and his home district Dharmapuri.
According to reports, the DVAC has booked KP Anbalagan and four of his family members for amassing assets disproportionate to his known source of income. The former minister was accused of piling the wealth illegitimately while he was in power from 2016 to 2021 and he has amassed assets to the tune of Rs 11.32 crore. An FIR has been lodged against him and his family members- his wife Malliga (55), his sons Sasi Mohan (29), and Chandra Mohan (32), and Chandra Mohan's wife Vaishnavi (32).
The DVAC in the FIR has stated that Anbalagan, during the period from April 2016 to March 2021 and his tenure as Minister for Higher Education has acquired and was in possession of immovable and movable assets in his name and in the names of his family members, relatives, and others which are disproportionate to his known sources of income and thereby intentionally enriched himself illicitly during the period of his office."
In 2016, the former minister had declared that he had savings of Rs 10.1 crore and in 2021, his assets increased by additional Rs 11.32 crore, which has been found disproportionate to the known sources of his income. Our sources say that besides conducting searches at the properties that are linked to Anbalagan, the DVAC officials are also been conducting raids at the residence of Pappireddipatti ADMK MLA Govindhasamy, who is a close associate of the former minister.
After learning that the DVAC has raided Anbalagan, hundreds of ADMK cadres have gathered before the residence of the former minister and several of them had voiced against the raids that the ADMK has been terming as political vendetta by the DMK government. Earlier, former ADMK Ministers MR Vijayabhaskar, SP Velumani, KC Veeramani, C Vijayabaskar, Thangamani had faced raids from DVAC and Anbalagan is the sixth former minister to join the club and these raids have happened with the allegations of amassing more wealth against them. It must be noted that KP Anbalagan has been representing the Palacode assembly constituency in the current legislative assembly as an ADMK MLA.
