Days after the Tamil Nadu government has launched the portal with the view of rescuing the Tamil people stranded in various states and foreign countries amid the lockdown imposed in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak, over 1.20 lakh people took to the portal and registered themselves to return to Tamil Nadu.
The website aims to be the channel connecting the stranded workers directly to the state government and the registrations from the out of borders Tamil people had piled up in a short time as they have requested the state government authorities to ease and assist in their return to the state.
According to the reports, the registrations of 1.26 lakh people include 52,000 Tamil people living in foreign countries while the rest are stranded at various states. Last week, the government has launched the official website [nonresidenttamil.org] in which the stranded people, who are willing to return to Tamil Nadu, can register their details.
The website states that the registration would let the government make adequate quarantine arrangements for the people who returned from overseas and other states. The website puts out various questions to the applicant regarding the COVID-19 testing and quarantine guidelines. It also has options for the people who belong to the other states and stranded in Tamil Nadu.
The reports stated that about 1.18 lakh people who are stranded in Tamil Nadu have registered in the portal as on Sunday morning, requesting the state government to facilitate their return to their home states and most of them are migrant workers, who lost their job and pay in the wake of the lockdown.
The officials said that the number of people who are willing to return to their native states from Tamil Nadu has been expected to decrease as the state government has permitted to resume the operations of the industries. The state government has, on last Saturday, announced that the statewide lockdown has been extended till May 17 to curb the spread of the virus. However, the government has given no relaxations for the containment zones and hotspots.
The government stated that people who wish to return or to leave Tamil Nadu in their own vehicles, they can request the vehicles passes while registering in the portal. All those who return to Tamil Nadu from other states and from abroad would be going through the medical check-up and they would be kept under quarantine.
