A 23-year-old house surgeon, attached to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department in Kilpauk Medical College in Chennai, was found dead in her hostel room in the college premises on Friday, reports say.
According to the reports, two of her friends had tried to open the door of the surgeon's room. Despite multiple knocks and phone calls, she didn't respond following which they alerted the hostel authorities and administration. The authorities had broken the door and found that she was unconscious. The local police department was informed about the incident and she was taken to the hospital.
However, she was declared brought dead at the hospital. After her demise, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh had visited the hostel and conducted an inquiry. The reports stated that the deceased surgeon wasn't deputed for COVID-19 duty but she was working in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of the medical college.
The medical authorities had collected swabs from her body for COVID-19 testing. However, the results returned negative and the initial investigation didn't find any physical injury marks on her body and the findings from the autopsy were inconclusive. According to the police department, the cause of death is not immediately known and Kilpauk police had registered a case under the grounds of unnatural death and further investigation is on.
The hospital authorities stated that the woman was a Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) doctor and she had visited Indonesia with her parents and she was under home quarantine. She joined duty on April 18 and residing at the hostel in the college campus since then. She belongs to Chennai and was staying at the hostel in the wake of the lockdown.
She had dinner with her friends and spoke to her parents, who are currently living in Vellore, at 10 pm on Thursday and since she didn't wake up for duty on Friday, two of her friends knocked the door and being left with no response, they alerted the authorities who found that she was unconscious in her room.
