The Villupuram police department has, on Monday, detained two ADMK members for reportedly setting fire on a 14-year-old girl as the shocking incident has revealed the prevalence of the grounds of violence against women amid the Coronavirus outbreak.
According to the reports, the incident has occurred at the Sirumadurai colony near Thiruvennainallur, Villupuram at around 11.30 am on Sunday where the two ADMK functionaries poured kerosene on the teenage girl and set fire on her. The girl was identified as the daughter of Jayabal, who runs a petty shop in the area.
She sustained with 95% of burn injuries and was taken to the Villupuram Government Medical College and Hospital in Mundiyambakkam for further treatments. However, the girl was declared dead on Monday morning.
The police department had arrested two ADMK cadres following her death and the suspects have been identified as 52-year-old Murugan who is the husband of the former ADMK councilor and 60-year-old Kaliyaperumal who is also the member of the ruling party.
The police department stated that the deceased and the arrested belong to the same community. The district law enforcement has arrested them with accord to the statement of the victim.
According to The Hindu, the girl's family said that she was alone at home on Sunday and taking care of their shop in front of their house, during which the duo stormed in and poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
The girl started screaming upon which the neighbors came for the rescue. While in treatment, she confessed to the Magistrate that the two ADMK members set her on fire. The police department has registered a case for further interrogations. They have been booked under sections 302 - Murder, 341- Punishment for wrongful restraint, 342- punishment for wrongful confinement, 323- punishment for voluntarily causing hurt, 324 - causing hurt by dangerous weapons, 294b - sings, utters any obscene song or words in the public place, 452 - trespassing the house to hurt, assault, or wrongful restraint.
The initial investigations stated that the arrested duo had enmity with Jayabal's brother. The duo had attacked Jayabal's brother eight years ago along with six others. However, all the accused concerning the attack were released on bail.
