The Medical Committee, which comprised of the medical experts, installed by the Tamil Nadu government to track the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state, has, on Friday, advised the government to extend the lockdown for two more weeks as the state has been reporting with more cases each day.
Their recommendation has come at a crucial time amid the floating speculations that prevail in the state on whether the government would extend the lockdown, that will play its role till April 14th. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has chaired a meeting with the 19-member committee to review the current developments, with having just four days to mark the end of the current lockdown period.
According to the reports, the meeting was held at the Secretariat on Friday morning and lasted for two hours and Health Minister Vijayabaskar, Chief Secretary Shanmugam, Health Secretary, and other senior officials were also present during which the Chief Minister took stock of the reports from the medical panel. While addressing the reporters after the conclusion of the meet, Dr. Prathiba, who is part of the panel, said that all the doctors in the panel felt that the lockdown must be extended for 14 more days.
She stated that the number of positive cases has been increasing each day in the state amid the preventive measures and efforts taken by the government and the committee has recommended the government to extend the lockdown. The reports say that this medical committee was installed earlier this month for framing treatment protocols for COVID-19 infections.
The committee's recommendation to extend the lockdown has come a day after Edappadi Palaniswami said that the final decision on the extension would be taken based on the inputs provided by the medical committee. Since the committee advised to extend the embargo and restrictions for two more weeks, the state government is highly likely to pass the directive to extend the lockdown.
