As Chennai and the areas in the districts of Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur that fall under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai police limits are going through the enhanced lockdown for 12 days from June 19 to June 30 owing to the rapid spread of COVID-19, the law enforcement agencies of these districts had deployed tight measures to monitor the movements of people.
As part of the measure, the police departments of these districts have been seizing the vehicles from people who entered the districts from Chennai without possessing a valid reason and e-pass. According to the reports, around 4,000 police have been deployed in these three districts with the view of ensuring that no one defies the restrictions and enter from Chennai.
The police personnel of these three districts had seized more than 400 vehicles from people who violated the lockdown from Friday morning- the first day of the intense lockdown. The reports say that the law enforcement agencies have installed 17 check posts at the border of Chennai and three districts to regulate the movement of people.
Along with the border check posts, a total of 61 check posts have been set up in these districts to monitor the movement of people within the districts and the police personnel at these check posts barricade the movement and seize the vehicle if the rider found to have invalid reason and e-pass to enter the districts. About 120 patrol vehicles have been surveilling the movements in every corner to ensure that people move only for essential services.
Meanwhile, the Chennai police department has seized more than 1000 vehicles from Friday morning as the authorities had installed tight barricades to ensure that no one hops out unnecessarily. According to the Chennai police commissioner Viswanathan, the department has set up more than 200 check posts in the city limits to carry out extensive checking on the movement of people.
According to the state government's order, people must refrain from using cars or two-wheelers to purchase vegetables and essentials, rather they have been instructed to walk to the nearest market and people have been mandated to wear masks and adhere to the directives of the government. These four districts have emerged as active hotspots for the virus spread.
As of Thursday, Tamil Nadu has reported 23,065 active cases of which 19,872 cases belong to Chennai and its three adjacent districts as curbing the spread in these hotspots would contribute the state to flatten the curve of COVID-19 affected cases.
