12 days of lockdown: Here's the main reason why Chennai goes under enhanced lockdown!

As Chennai and its neighboring districts are preparing to take the strict and exceptional stand from the rest of the districts in the state by going through the enhanced lockdown for 12 days from June 19 to June 30, the Tamil Nadu government has, on Tuesday, said that the lockdown has been imposed in these four districts after the collectors of rest of the districts raised concerns over the exponential rise of COVID-19 cases.

According to the reports, the government said that the decision of imposing the lockdown was taken after the recommendations moved by the medical experts' committee and after the collectors of the rest of districts called the government to enforce the lockdown in these four districts.

The collectors of other districts raised strong concerns that people who are returning from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur have been spreading the virus across the state and appealed the government to restrict the movement following which, based on experts' committee and collectors' stance, the state government has imposed 12 days lockdown in these four worst-affected districts.

The order said that the collectors sought restrictions on the movement of people in and out of these hotspots when they had a virtual meeting with the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary on June 12  and along with that, the review meeting that held between the Chennai police and zonal teams had suggested the government to roll out internal restrictions within the city limits with the view of carrying out extensive and effective contact tracing and testing, early detection of carriers, and containing the spread.

According to the order, these four districts have been reporting soaring cases because of the dense and congested population and houses that stay in close proximity. Chennai has been accounting for two-thirds of cases and deaths reported in the state. As of Tuesday, the state has reported 48,019 cases of which 34,245 cases belong to Chennai and the state's death toll stands at 528 of which 422 deaths were reported in Chennai.
