The Indian cricket players are showered with some form of honors across the country for their splendid shows and victory against Australia and lifting the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While the players were given a royal welcome when they arrived in India, some of them had also been given a responsible role for carrying out a public campaign off the green field.
Chennai based cricketer Washington Sundar had a grand reception when he arrived at Chennai airport with thousands gathering to celebrate their native boy who shined in Australia. Besides celebrating him, the Greater Chenna Corporation has now named Sundar as the Election Icon for the Chennai district for the upcoming Tamil Nadu legislative elections.
Taking to Twitter, the city's civic body said, "Vanakkam Chennai, you guessed him right! We are glad to announce @Sundarwashi5 as the District Election Icon of #NammaChennai Let’s gear up for 100% Participation & Ethical Voting". According to reports, Washington Sundar, as a young voter, will reach out to first-time voters and encourage them to vote. With the crucial responsibility, 21-year-old Sundar will play on the election battlefield for campaigning among the young and first-time voters to cast their votes in the upcoming assembly polls.
Along with the honor of making the young voters take part in the democratic process, Washington Sundar will also be getting a surprise gift from Anand Mahindra, the chairman of Mahindra Group. Anand Mahindra had last week announced that cricketers Mohammed Siraj, T Natarajan, Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, and Navdeep Saini will get an all-new THAR- SUV car for each for their heroic and outstanding performances in the Test series against Australia.
Taking to Twitter, Anand Mahindra said, "Six young men made their debuts in the recent historic series #INDvAUS (Shardul’s 1 earlier appearance was short-lived due to injury)They’ve made it possible for future generations of youth in India to dream & Explore the Impossible". The Indian billionaire tweeted, "Theirs are true ‘Rise’ stories; overcoming daunting odds in the pursuit of excellence. They serve as an inspiration in all arenas of life. It gives me great personal pleasure to gift each of these debutants an All-New THAR SUV on my own account—at no expense to the company".
"The reason for this gift is to exhort young people to believe in themselves & ‘Take the road less traveled.’ Bravo Mohammed, Shardul, Shubhman, Natarajan, Navdeep & Washington! I now plead with @Mahindra_Auto to get them their THARS on priority", Mahindra added as he took everyone into the surprise through his remarkable gift for the young players honoring their contribution to the victory.
India has lifted the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by winning the fourth and final Test match in the Gabba, Brisbane. The Indian team had pushed Australia to record a defeat in Brisbane for the first time after 32 years. Tamil Nadu-based players Washington Sundar and Natarajan had made their Test debuts in this fourth Test match in Brisbane while Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj were the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively for India in the Border-Gavaskar Test series. It must be noted that Natarajan has become the first Indian player to make a debut in all three formats in the same tour.
